Recording Industry Gives Thanks for November Awards
Washington, DC - Heading into the holiday season, the industry showed no signs of slowing down as pop and hip-hop acts continued to dominate the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) Gold® and Platinum® certifications.
"Revelation," the third album by Universal Records recording artist 98 Degrees was certified Gold®, Platinum® and double Platinum® this month as was "Stankonia" the latest release by the critically acclaimed hip-hop duo Outkast.
"The continued impact and growth of pop and hip-hop music has been the story throughout the year," said RIAA President and CEO Hilary Rosen. "These artists are continually setting sales records and raising the bar for the entire industry."
"Sweet Kisses" and "Who Let The Dogs Out" the respective major label debuts of Jessica Simpson and Baha Men were also certified double Platinum® this month.
"Dr. Dre 2001" by former N.W.A. member Dr. Dre was certified for sales of six million while his protégé Eminem's "The Slim Shady LP" was certified four times Platinum®.
Other hip-hop artists joined the party as Ja Rule's "Rule 3:36" was certified both Gold® and Platinum® and the latest releases by Scarface ("The Last of A Dying Breed") and Trina ("Da Baddest Bitch") were certified Gold®.
Fueled by heavy radio play and video rotation, many of rock music's new faces earned Gold® or Platinum® honors in November. Disturbed ("The Sickness") and P.O.D. ("The Fundamental Elements of Southtown") each earned their first Platinum® awards this month while Orgy and SR-71 were awarded Gold® albums for "Vapor Transmission" and "Now You See Inside" respectively.
Several of rocks established veterans enjoyed success this month as well. The Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" reached the unprecedented 27 million sales level, surpassing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as the best selling album in history.
Atlantic Records dipped into its catalog to upgrade six Foreigner titles. "Agent Provocateur" (three million), "Double Vision" (six million), "Foreigner" (five million), "Head Games" (three million), "Records" (five million) each climbed the Multi-Platinum™ ladder this month while "The Very Best…and Beyond" was certified Platinum® and double Platinum® bringing their cumulative album sales to 31 million.
Additionally, the collaboration between guitar legend Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes, "Live at The Greek," was certified Gold® this month while Styx' "Greatest Hits" was certified Platinum®.
Thanks in part to her appearance on Eminem's single "Stan" and her recent performance with the controversial rapper on Saturday Night Live, Arista's pop sensation Dido received her first Platinum® award this month for "No Angel."
Two artists from opposite ends of the Virgin Records musical spectrum earned awards this month as well. "Greatest Hits," the career-spanning collection of songs by Lenny Kravitz was certified Gold® and Platinum® this month while Yanni's "If I Could Tell You" was certified Gold®.
Charlotte Church earned her third consecutive Gold® record for her collection of traditional Christmas songs, "Dream a Dream" while talk show host Rosie O'Donnell earned her second Gold® album for "Another Rosie Christmas."
The RIAA awarded a total of 15 Multi-Platinum™, 13 Platinum® and 28 Gold® albums in November. All certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman. Complete lists of all album and single awards for November 2000 are attached and can also be accessed at www.riaa.com
